The festive season is upon us, and nothing brightens a space quite like the vibrant reds and greens of a Poinsettia plant. Native to Mexico, Poinsettias are synonymous with Christmas cheer, but they do require a little extra love and attention to thrive throughout the holiday season and beyond. With Haws’ expertly crafted watering cans, you can easily care for your poinsettia and keep it looking spectacular for this season and maybe into the next!
Here’s a simple guide to ensure that your Poinsettia flourishes this Christmas:
Choose the Right Spot for Your Poinsettia:
Poinsettias thrive in bright, indirect light, so place your plant near a sunny window, but avoid direct sunlight as it can scorch the leaves. Ensure it’s in a room where the temperature stays between 16–22°C (60–72°F). Poinsettias really dislike cold drafts or sudden temperature changes (this leads to the classic leaf drop that we all get so frustrated at), so keep them away from doors, fireplaces, and radiators.
Water Wisely with Precision:
Over watering or under watering can quickly harm a Poinsettia. Keep the soil slightly moist but not soggy. Here's how you can achieve the perfect balance with Haws:
- Use a Haws indoor watering can such as the Fazeley Flow or Rowley Ripple which are both specifically designed with a long spout for precision watering. This allows you to target the base of the plant without splashing the leaves, which could lead to fungal issues.
- Check the soil daily by gently pressing your finger about an inch deep. If the soil feels dry at this level, it’s time to water. Pour just enough water to moisten the soil evenly, allowing any excess to drain out.
Pro Tip: If your Poinsettia is in a decorative pot without drainage holes, either lift out the nursery pot to water it on a draining board or water it a lot less to avoid it sitting in a puddle of water in the base of the planter.
Maintain Humidity Levels:
Poinsettias prefer slightly humid conditions, especially in the dry winter months in your home. If the air in your room is particularly dry, try one of these solutions:
- Lightly mist the leaves using our Smethwick Spritzer, which delivers a gentle, even spray. This helps replicate a more humid environment without soaking the leaves.
- Alternatively, place a tray or bowl of water near the plant (not underneath it), and let evaporation do the work.
Feed Sparingly:
Your Poinsettia doesn’t need much feeding during the holiday season. However, if you plan to keep it well into the New Year, a diluted houseplant fertiliser once a month will suffice. Use the Haws Langley Sprinkler or Bartley Burbler, which makes mixing and applying liquid feed a breeze.
Prune for Longevity:
Once the festive season is over, your Poinsettia may start losing its bracts (the colourful red leaves - Nope, these are not flower petals). Don’t worry—this is a natural process! In early spring, prune the plant back to about 4–6 inches to encourage healthy growth. A pair of clean, sharp pruning scissors, will ensure clean cuts and prevent damage to the stems.
Repot for the Year Ahead:
If you want to keep your Poinsettia alive for another year, consider repotting it in the spring. Use a fresh, well-draining indoor potting mix and plant it in a slightly larger pot with good drainage and add it to your existing houseplant collection.
